**Brent at $110.32 is pinned above $109 support while physical Brent trades at $123.10 and US officials tell Gulf states to brace for post-midterm Iran strikes, so buy dips.**

## Key levels

- Brent: support 109, resistance 112.63
- WTI: support 99.44, resistance 103.55

## Price Action & Technicals

> Ignore the -4.74% headline; $109.00 Brent is the line, and a physical premium of $12.78 says the downside is limited.

**Brent closed at $110.32 and the headline -4.74% print is a mark-to-market artefact, not a sell-off.** Yesterday's brief had Brent at $110.97, so the true day-on-day move is about **-0.6%**. Wednesday's wires (Rigzone, CNBC) had oil rising, and WTI slipped only **-0.32% to $101.43**. The 5-day change is **-0.20%**, inside a tight **$109.00-$112.63** range.

**Distillates are the weak link.** Heating oil fell **-5.65% to $4.6347/gal** and RBOB fell **-3.62% to $3.1019/gal**, yet the distillate crack still sits at **$93.23/bbl**. The 3-2-1 is **$50.31/bbl**. Refiners are being paid extraordinarily well to run crude, which supports crude demand.

**The curve is steeply backwardated.** Brent runs from **$110.32 front** to **$101.16 in Apr 27** and **$90.45 in Oct 27 (-18.0%)**. WTI is **-17.1%** to Oct 27. The Brent-WTI spread is **$8.89**, and EIA spot Brent at **$123.10 (Oct 27)** is **$12.78 above** the futures screen. Physical is tighter than paper, and paper is playing catch-up.

## Supply & Inventories

> Draws plus 92.8% runs plus a $93 distillate crack mean the tightness is in diesel; gasoline weakness is the demand-side noise.

**US crude stocks fell 1.9M bbl to 410.6M bbl, 4% below the 5-year average.** Refinery utilization is **92.8%**, production is **13.99M bbl/d** and exports are **4.9M bbl/d**. The US is exporting hard into a short world, so domestic barrels are being pulled out.

**Cushing fell 0.6M bbl to 27.0M bbl (33rd percentile, z=-0.7).** It is not critically low, but it is drifting the wrong way for WTI spreads. The SPR is **282.6M bbl (-0.1M w/w)**, so there is no meaningful policy cushion.

**Demand is split.** Gasoline supplied is **8.4M bbl/d, 14th percentile (seasonal z=-1.7)**, which is real demand destruction at the pump. Distillate supplied is **4.2M bbl/d (+0.5M w/w, 79th percentile)**, and that is where the shortage lives. The **$93.23 distillate crack versus a $28.85 gasoline crack** says the same thing.

**The EIA STEO sees Brent at $111.00 for October, against a $110.32 market.** It sees **$72.00 by December 2027**. The consensus view is that this is a temporary spike, but nothing in the physical data says it ends this quarter.

## Geopolitics & Disruptions

> Own upside into the Nov 3 midterms; strike optionality after them is asymmetric to the upside.

**The binary event is after Tuesday's midterms.** Reports say the US told Gulf countries to prepare for **Iran strikes after the midterm elections**, and the US military told vessels with no need to transit **Hormuz** to stay away. The market is pricing a ceasefire-lite, and that is wrong. Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani delegations met Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday, but oilprice.com's own headline is that peace talks will not save buyers from **$100-plus oil**.

**Infrastructure is being targeted.** Refineries damaged in the US/Israel-Iran war are driving a global fuel shortage. **Scorpio Tankers' LR2 rates average $181,000 a day**, a number that only prints when product flows are badly dislocated.

**Russian barrels are a political mess, not a supply fix.** UBS puts Russian exports only **10% below pre-war levels**. The first Russian diesel tanker to the US under the Trump-Putin deal has already dropped New York as its destination, and Senator Blumenthal is demanding it turn around. **UBS raised its year-end Brent forecast to $110, up from $100**, its second hike this month, because Gulf flows remain below pre-war levels.

## Positioning & Flows

> With specs at 101,906 net long and OVX near 59, buy dips through call spreads rather than naked futures.

**Net speculative length is a healthy but not crowded 101,906 contracts.** Money managers hold **178,884 longs against 76,978 shorts**, about 2.3:1. Open interest fell **73,685 to 2,502,206**, so some length was liquidated, but the latest report is dated Oct 20 and is nine days stale.

**Volatility says the market is paying for protection.** The **OVX is 58.59 (+9.97% on the day, +8.08% over 5 days)**, with a 5-day range of **53.35-60.96**. The FRED spot OVX of 55.44 is the Oct 27 reading. At these levels options are expensive, and consensus sits in call spreads rather than outright futures.

**Natural gas is a distraction.** NG jumped **+16.37% to $3.028/MMBtu**, but that is November expiry roll-off and LNG feedgas back **above 20 Bcf/d**, not an oil signal.

## Macro & Cross-Asset

> Macro is a headwind that crude is shrugging off; fade dollar-driven dips while the Gulf risk premium holds.

**A dollar at 121.32 (DXY, Oct 23) is a headwind that oil is ignoring.** Brent holds **$110** against a very strong dollar, and the supply shock is dominating the currency effect. The Fed funds rate is **3.75%**, which leaves no room for aggressive easing while energy keeps CPI hot (**336.298** in September).

**Politics is capping the upside narrative.** Trump called high gasoline prices **short-term pain** at a Corpus Christi rally. The administration has the SPR (**282.6M bbl**), the Russian diesel deal and methane rollbacks as levers. The EPA says the methane rollback lowers 2027 US crude prices by only **11 cents a barrel**, so the levers are small.

**Gas-side supply response is already flashing.** Expand Energy is curtailing production in acknowledgement that the market is weakening, and US gas output is at record highs. That is bearish gas, not crude, but it confirms that the crude-gas divergence is wide.

## What to watch

- US midterm results, Nov 3-4: any signal on post-election Iran strike timing
- Hormuz transit advisories and tanker AIS flows, daily from the US military/CENTCOM
- Brent Dec contract expiry on Oct 30 and roll into Jan: watch spread behaviour and settlement mismatches
- EIA weekly petroleum data, Wed Nov 4 at 10:30 ET: Cushing below 27.0M bbl and distillate demand above 4.2M bbl/d
- Next CFTC COT, Friday Oct 30: does net spec hold above 100K after the OI drop

## Risks to the view

- Iran ceasefire or regional deal announced before the midterms (possible): Brent tests $100-$105 on the removal of the war premium
- Demand destruction from sustained $100+ crude, already visible in gasoline supplied at the 14th percentile (likely)
- Russian diesel and crude flows into the US/Europe ramp faster than expected, easing the distillate crack (tail risk)

## Outlook

Brent grinds higher toward **$115-$120** into mid-November as post-midterm strike risk and a physical premium of $12.78 pull paper up. UBS's $110 year-end target looks conservative. A close below **$109.00** would invalidate the call and open **$105**.
