Price Action & Technicals

Crude's five-day range shows a sharp repricing lower with volatility still historically elevated despite pulling back from its high.

Brent closed at $78.96, down -15.19% over the five-session window, trading within a range of $96.36 to $78.45. WTI closed at $76.05, down -15.53%, ranging from $93.64 to $75.52. Both benchmarks are sitting near the bottom of their five-day ranges, with the close essentially at the session low for Brent and just above the low for WTI.

Refined products moved less sharply: heating oil fell -12.25% and RBOB gasoline fell -7.38%, both underperforming the decline in crude on a percentage basis. Natural gas was the outlier, up +1.70% to $3.24. The Crude Oil VIX (OVX) closed at $53.10, down -11.91% over the window but still well above its five-day low of 46.08 and only modestly below its high of 63.09, indicating volatility remains elevated even as it retreats from the peak.

Positioning & Flows

Net speculative length remains net long by roughly 118,000 contracts despite the price decline shown in this snapshot.

The CFTC report dated 2026-06-16 shows money manager longs of 220,780 contracts against shorts of 102,895, leaving net speculative length at 117,885 contracts — a long/short ratio of roughly 2.1-to-1. Total open interest stands at 2,612,673 contracts.

This dataset does not include a prior-week comparison, so the change in net positioning into this decline cannot be quantified here. What is observable is that speculative accounts remain net long by a meaningful margin even as spot prices sit near the bottom of the five-day range.

Macro & Cross-Asset

No cross-asset signal in this dataset directly explains the size of the five-day crude move.

The US Dollar Index reads 119.256, the Federal Funds Rate is 3.63% (as of 2026-06-01), CPI stands at 332.568, and the 10-Year Treasury yield is 4.43%. None of these series show a level or move in this package that directly aligns with the magnitude of the crude decline.

Прогноз

With Brent and WTI down over 15% across five sessions and OVX still elevated near 53 despite easing from its high, the technical setup favors continued volatility rather than stabilization. Net speculative longs of roughly 117,885 contracts leave room for further position unwinding if prices remain pinned near the five-day lows of $78.45 (Brent) and $75.52 (WTI). The five-day highs (96.36 Brent, 93.64 WTI) mark the upper bound of the current technical range.
