Brent Sheds 5% As Products Diverge, Vol Stays Elevated

Brent fell 5.10% over five sessions to $73.15 even as crude stocks drew down and refined products rallied, a divergence not explained by the inventory data.

Price Action & Technicals

Brent's decline outpaced WTI while products rallied, producing a crack-spread divergence unexplained by the crude price data alone.

Brent crude closed at $73.15, down 5.10% over the five-session window, trading within a range of $71.40–$78.34 and finishing near the lower third of that band. WTI fell a smaller 3.36% to $70.75, inside a $68.56–$74.45 range, indicating the front-month spread narrowed slightly as WTI held up better than Brent.

Refined products moved in the opposite direction of crude: Heating Oil gained 5.61% to $3.33 and RBOB Gasoline rose 3.46% to $3.06, both closing near their 5-day highs. This divergence between falling crude and rising product prices implies a widening crack spread over the window, a pattern not explained by the crude benchmark price action alone.

Crude Oil VIX (OVX) eased 3.28% to 45.07 but remains well above the 40 threshold typically associated with elevated volatility regimes, with a high of 49.87 during the window.

Supply & Inventories

A 3.8M bbl crude draw and 96.6% refinery utilization did not prevent crude prices from falling over the window.

EIA data for the week ending 2026-06-26 shows crude stocks at 408.4M bbl, a weekly draw of -3.8M bbl. Production held steady at 13.81M bbl/day and imports were 5.28M bbl/day. Refinery utilization printed at 96.6%, a high level consistent with the strength seen in gasoline and heating oil prices over the same window.

The combination of a crude draw and near-record refinery runs would typically be read as supportive for crude, yet Brent and WTI both fell over the concurrent five-day window — a mismatch that is not explained by the inventory data in this package.

Positioning & Flows

Money managers were net long 100,295 contracts as of June 23, a stale reading relative to the crude price decline that followed.

The latest CFTC report (dated 2026-06-23) shows money managers holding 207,881 long contracts against 107,586 short, for a net speculative position of 100,295 — a long/short ratio near 1.93. Total open interest stood at 2,533,875 contracts.

Because the CFTC report predates the tail end of the five-session price window, it does not capture any positioning shift that may have accompanied the subsequent decline in Brent and WTI. A large net-long book heading into a price drop raises the risk of further long liquidation once more current positioning data becomes available.

Macro & Cross-Asset

Dollar and rate levels remain elevated but do not, on their own, account for the size of the five-day crude decline.

The US Dollar Index stood at 120.9525, a historically elevated level, alongside a 10-Year Treasury yield of 4.38% and a Federal Funds Rate of 3.63%. CPI was last recorded at 332.568. No cross-asset series in this package shows a level or move that directly aligns with the magnitude of the crude selloff.

Прогноз

With Brent near its 5-day low of $71.40 and WTI holding above $68.56, technical support levels are in focus; a break lower would leave no nearby support in the current data range. The stale CFTC report showing a large net-long book (100,295 contracts) as of June 23 raises the risk of further liquidation-driven pressure if crude fails to stabilize above current levels.
