Brent Near $72 As Vol Cools, Specs Stay Net Long

Brent and WTI drifted lower over the five-session window while implied vol fell sharply and speculative positioning stayed net long.

Key levels

Price Action & Technicals

Both benchmarks and refined products closed lower on the week while implied volatility compressed but stayed above 40.

Brent settled at $71.80, down -0.26% over the five-session window, trading within a $70.14–$75.12 range and sitting closer to the lower half of that band. WTI closed at $68.69, off -0.78%, with a $67.04–$71.86 range showing a similar skew toward the low end.

Product markets underperformed crude: RBOB fell -1.35% to $2.92 and heating oil dropped -0.81% to $3.18, both closing near the bottom of their five-day ranges ($2.85–$3.07 and $3.15–$3.41 respectively). The Crude Oil VIX (OVX) fell -10.42% to 41.62, retreating from a high of 48.84 but still well above its five-day low of 39.94, indicating implied volatility eased but remains elevated on an absolute basis.

Supply & Inventories

Crude stocks rose 3.0M bbl even with refinery utilization near 96%, a combination this dataset does not fully explain.

EIA data for the period ending 2026-07-03 shows crude stocks at 411.4M bbl, a weekly build of +3.0M bbl. Domestic production held at 13.86M bbl/day and imports at 5.63M bbl/day. Refinery utilization printed at 95.8%, a high absolute level.

The combination of a stock build alongside near-96% utilization is not explained by this dataset alone; the inventory add occurred despite refinery throughput running at a seasonally high rate, which is not resolved by the production and import figures shown here.

Positioning & Flows

Money managers remain net long by nearly 2-to-1 despite the five-day pullback in Brent and WTI.

The CFTC report dated 2026-06-30 shows money managers holding 199,357 long contracts against 105,644 short, for a net speculative position of 93,713 contracts — a long/short ratio of roughly 1.9:1. Total open interest stood at 2,568,532 contracts, putting net spec length at roughly 3.6% of open interest.

This positioning snapshot reflects a market where speculative accounts remain decisively net long even as spot prices for both benchmarks softened over the same window, a divergence visible in the data but not explained by it.

Macro & Cross-Asset

Dollar, rates, and CPI levels are recorded concurrently with the crude move but no correlation data links them in this package.

The US Dollar Index stood at 120.69 on 2026-07-02, alongside a Fed Funds Rate of 3.63% and a 10-Year Treasury yield of 4.49%. CPI was last recorded at 332.813.

No cross-asset correlation data is available in this package to link these macro levels directly to the observed crude price action; they are presented as concurrent readings only.

Outlook

Both Brent and WTI closed in the lower half of their five-session ranges with product markets underperforming crude, while OVX's sharp decline suggests near-term volatility expectations are easing from recent highs. Net spec positioning remains firmly long, which could amplify downside moves if prices test the $70.14 (Brent) or $67.04 (WTI) support levels shown in this window.
